Position: Design Manager
Location: Los Angeles, California
Duration: Perm Placement
Pay Rate: $70/hr–74/hr

Job Overview:
The Design Manager will oversee and coordinate the district's design process for architectural and engineering (A&E) services. This role ensures that all plans align with functional programs, budgets, environmental considerations, and legal requirements. The Design Manager will manage multiple projects, collaborate with architects and consultants, and ensure compliance with standards and guidelines. This position requires strong leadership, organizational, and technical skills to deliver high-quality, sustainable designs that meet the needs of the district and community.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage, develop, and coordinate the district’s design process for A&E services to ensure alignment with functional, budgetary, environmental, and legal requirements.
  • Oversee multiple projects, including engineering and critical repairs, by collaborating with architects, consultants, and district personnel to ensure timely completion.
  • Ensure compliance with LAUSD standards and guidelines by working with design professionals and administrators to meet educational and building code standards.
  • Establish and implement a selection process to identify the most qualified architectural firm for each project based on performance standards.
  • Provide architects with clear and consistent direction regarding project goals, standards, site, schedule, and budget.
  • Establish and maintain an efficient design review process to ensure alignment with project goals and objectives.
  • Ensure maximum value for budgeted funds and deliver sustainable designs that meet district, community, and environmental needs.
  • Review design changes to confirm projects remain within budget.
  • Monitor project planning and design status, providing findings, recommendations, and updates as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 8 years of full-time, paid professional experience managing facilities design or planning and coordinating capital projects, including design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling.
  • At least 4 years of experience must involve the design, planning, and construction of educational facilities or similar public agency projects.
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from a recognized college or university.
  • Preferred: Valid Certificate of Registration as an Architect by the California State Architectural Board or Professional Engineer license by the California State Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Pay Range: $70 - $74

The specific compensation for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
