Position Summary

The Mineral Area College Theater Faculty and Director is multifaceted, encompassing instructional and administrative responsibilities. This position requires a dynamic individual capable of teaching a range of college-level theater courses, including acting, stagecraft, theater history, and playwriting. Through a course-release per semester, the position is also responsible for coordinating the theater program's operations, theater general maintenance, scheduling of events, and institutional partnership with the Mineral Area Fine Arts Academy (MAFAA).

This position will oversee all aspects of Mineral Area College theatrical productions, from production selection and budgeting to casting, directing, and technical execution. They will also be responsible for student recruitment, curriculum development, and fostering partnerships with transfer institutions and regional fine arts organizations. A strong commitment to student success, excellent communication and organizational skills, and a proven track record of theatrical production are essential for this position. Additional instructional opportunities with MAFAA are available during off-contract days and times, including summer months.

Key Performance Indicators

  1. Successful execution of Fall and Spring semester Mineral Area College Theater productions.
  2. Continuous improvements to ensure ten program completers per academic year and performances that sell more than half of seating capacity.
  3. Effective scheduling and management of the Mineral Area College Fine Arts Theater.
  4. Maintain collaborative partnerships between the college, Mineral Area College Music Department, Mineral Area College Art Department, Mineral Area Fine Arts Academy, and the Mineral Area Council on the Arts.

Essential Functions

Instruction

  1. Develop and deliver engaging and effective courses in various areas of theater as listed in the college course catalog.
  2. Create and maintain a supportive and welcoming learning environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
  3. Utilize diverse teaching methods and technologies to accommodate various learning styles.
  4. Assess student learning through a variety of methods, including performances, written assignments, and presentations.

Production:

  1. Secure rights for productions and adhere to production contract agreements.
  2. Direct and/or supervise student theater productions, including play selection, casting, rehearsals, ticket sales, marketing, and technical execution.
  3. Collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to ensure high-quality productions.
  4. Manage production budgets and resources effectively, including the procurement of external sponsorships and partnerships.

Curriculum Development:

  1. Develop and revise theater curriculum to meet the evolving needs of students and the industry.
  2. Establish transfer pathways and articulation agreements with university partners.
  3. Serve as a curriculum consultant to the Mineral Area Fine Arts Academy as needed.
  4. Stay current with trends and best practices in theater education.

Additional:

  1. Engage with the local community through theater outreach and collaborations.
  2. Prioritize student recruitment to drive enrollment into theater coursework.
  3. Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and progress.
  4. Adhere to college policies and procedures.
  5. Participate in required faculty meetings, committee work, and professional development activities.
  6. Perform other duties necessary for the success of the program.

Experience

Education:

A master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Theater Arts or a closely related field is required. Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in Theater Arts or a related field is preferred. Candidates making ample progress to obtain graduate credentialing will be considered.

Work Experience:

Proven experience in directing and/or designing theater productions is required. Demonstrated experience in teaching theater at the college level preferred.

Industry Knowledge:

Experience in technical theater areas (set design, lighting, sound, costumes, etc.) is required. Experience in playwriting or devising original work is preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Working in a professional office environment, this position requires sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, light lifting, grasping, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
